James “Jim” Charles Luker, 80, of Wynne, passed away on Wednesday, November 16. He was born February 24, 1942 in Little Rock to Mr. Joe Compton Luker, Sr and Mrs. Zula Inez “Stanley” Luker.
After growing up in North Little Rock, Jim graduated from U of A Law School. He loved hunting, fishing, golf, and a friendly game of dominoes. In retirement he took pride in building birdhouses and sharing his backyard tomatoes. He served as an Elder at Wynne Presbyterian Church where he enjoyed teaching Sunday school.
Jim dedicated his life to public service, first as the mayor of Wynne, then as a State Representative and Senator. In 16 years as a Democrat in the legislature he served on a range of committees, including chair of the Judiciary Committee, and worked to improve the Arkansas criminal justice system, crafting laws that addressed fair sentencing, recidivism, and corrections costs.
He is survived by his wife of thirty-eight years: Myra Jo “Burford” Luker, three sons: James “Jay” Luker, Jr. and wife Jennifer Zacharis of Lexington, MA, Hunt Luker and wife Jennifer Huang of Guangzhou, China, Stanley Luker of Boston, MA, and four grandchildren: Nico, Cora, Karenna and Braam.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Good Shepherd Center, 303 E Union Ave, Wynne, AR 72396.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
