Surrounded by her loving family, Susan Dee Montgomery, 59, went home to her heavenly father on January 24, 2024, in Rockwall, Texas.
Susan will be remembered by her ability to light up a room with a contagious smile, and her fierce devotion to her family. We honor her as a beautiful and loving daughter, wife, sister, mother, grandmother, aunt, niece and cousin.
Susan was born as the eldest to Larry and Margaret Slocum on February 5, 1964 in Wynne, Arkansas. Baptized in 1973, she committed her life to the Lord at the early age of 9 at Downtown Church of Christ in Searcy. One of Susan’s 1st essays she wrote about wanting to grow up to be just like her mom and we all knew she had her dad was wrapped around her finger. Susan was a great older sister to Sheri, Larry, Jr and Alexis. She loved playing a second mother to them. Whether it was getting carried away with the baby powder while helping with Sheri, curling her baby sister’s hair and pretending Alexis was her baby doll, or having deep conversations with Larry Jr for hours each week. Susan and Sheri were very close growing up. They enjoyed playing with friends, lots of joy rides on bikes with steering wheels and then eventually in Susan’s 1st car known as the “green bomb.” We all will never forget the drive to church where Susan was “learning” to drive a stick shift and Dad had to jump across the seat to stop us from rolling backwards down the hill while the other 4 of us sat in the backseat of the car fearing for our lives. Feeling confident that God saved us we continued on our journey and made it to church. So many memories we hold deep in our hearts that we will hold on to forever.
Susan was a graduate of Fort Smith South Side High School in 1982. She married the love of her life, Danny Montgomery on February 16, 1985. In 1988, Susan moved with her husband, children, parents, and siblings to Dallas, Texas but never let go of her love for the Razorbacks.
Susan loved with her whole heart her two boys Nick and Brett. She gave everything she had to raising them. Watching them play soccer, baseball, and football was the highlight of her days for many years.
Susan had a fulfilling career in accounting for nearly 30 years, but her favorite role was that of grandmother. Susan thrived as “Meme” to her three beloved grandchildren often taking them to the park, playing baseball with them in the yard, spending the weekend with them, and going to their sports games.
She treasured celebrating the holidays and attending weekly lunches with her whole family. Susan loved everything purple. She enjoyed flowers and even did the floral arrangements for her sister’s wedding. She was a huge fan of HGTV and the occasional mystery show.
Susan was preceded in death by her beloved husband of nearly 37 years, Paul “Danny” Montgomery. She is survived by her sons, Nicholas Watson and Brett Montgomery, her three grandchildren, Landon, Aiden, and Kylie Watson, her parents, Larry and Margaret Slocum, her brother, Larry Slocum Jr, her sisters and brothers-in-law, Sheri Martin and husband Mike, and Alexis Toney and husband Michael, and a host of aunts, nephews, and cousins.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, at Johnson Cemetery in Wynne.
Cross County Funeral Service & Crematory is honored with handling the service for the Montgomery family.
