Virgil "V. L." Simmons, JR Obituary

Virgil “V. L.” Lafayette Simmons, JR. of Wynne, Arkansas passed away Wednesday, December 16, 2019, at the age of 94 with his family by his side. He was born January 15, 1925 in Cascilla, Mississippi to Virgil L. Simmons, SR and Rebecca B. Ross Simmons.

“V. L.” was a WWII veteran serving in Europe when his country called him and was proud to serve. He loved and attended his church, Wynne Church of Christ as often as he could. He received his bachelor’s degree in accounting at Crowley Ridge Collage and had his own business as a bookkeeper. He was very outgoing, wanting to be a friend to everyone and enjoyed golfing. V L had strong political beliefs, was very optimistic, wasn’t afraid to try anything new, and he had much fun being a practical jokester even if he did end up being the brunt of his own jokes. Mr. Simmons was a small man with a big heart who loved God, family and his country.

Mr. Simmons was preceded in death by his parents, and an infant brother.

V. L. is survived by his ultimate sweetheart of 21 years, wife: Annette Franklin Simmons of the home, son: Lawrence “Larry” Simmons of Gassville, Arkansas, step son; Dale Martin of Vanndale, Arkansas, daughter: Becky Donnely of Carson City Nevada, Step daughter: Cheryl Boeckmann of Wynne, Arkansas, Lovon Davis of Jonesboro, Arkansas, brother: Hubert Simmons of Ridgeland, Mississippi, sister: Ida Williams of Newman, Georgia, 6 grandchildren, and many great grandchildren.

He is survived as well by dear and very special friends: Katherine Arnold, Jennifer MaKool Conn, Kathy Thomas, Barbara Rowe, Phyllis Kennon, and Tom Jessup.

A memorial celebration of life will be held Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Wynne Church of Christ with a visitation to begin prior to the memorial service at 1:00 p.m. also at the church. Inurnment will be at the Arkansas State Veteran Cemetery in Birdeye, Arkansas at a later date.

Brother Fred Strausser will be leading the service and those honored to serve as honorary pallbearers are Sonny Ball, Jerry Dallas, Homer Kennon, Stewart Kennon, Jim Rowe, David Sagasky, and Buddy Smith.
