Wilma Maxine Stokes, aged 82, was a cherished resident of Wynne who passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, in Jonesboro following a brief illness. She was born on December 12, 1942, in McCrory, the beloved daughter of Wilbur “Bill” and Maddie Lou Elliott McCuan. On May 16, 1960, she married Ray Paul Stokes, beginning a loving and devoted partnership.
Wilma dedicated 32 years of her professional life to Addison Shoe Factory, retiring in 2004. After retirement, she continued to serve her community by helping daily at the Senior Center, and with the addiction ministry and playing dominoes and card games with her friends. In her leisure time, Wilma delighted in collecting sunflowers, and doing word search puzzles. She was known for her regular attendance at Friday night auctions and Saturday night dances, where she found joy and fellowship. Above all, Wilma treasured the moments she spent with her family and friends, with her grandchildren holding a special place in her heart.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Bill and Maddie McCuan, husband of fifty-nine years: Ray Stokes, only son: Danny Stokes, two brothers: Wayne and Gerald McCuan, three sisters: Zula Cooper, Annie Fraze, Katherine Garrett and one grandchild: Raymond Stokes.
Survivors include one daughter: Debbie Nelson and her husband Robert of Wynne, two sisters: Carolyn Henderson and Betty Melvin both of Fair Oaks, daughter-in-law: Sheri Stokes of Lakeland, Tennessee, seven grandchildren: Candice, Daniel, Tiffany, Dana, Brittany, Matthew and Jeremy, thirteen great-grandchildren and her special friend: Bob Waterbury of Wynne and a host of other relatives and numerous friends.
Visitation for Wilma will take place on Saturday, October 18th, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the Wynne Church of God. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the same location. After the service, burial will be held at Woodman Cemetery in McCrory.
